Police trying new strategy to combat 'porch pirates'

Posted: Updated:

RANCHO CORDOVA, Ca. (KMOV.com) -- As the calendar moves through November toward Christmas, residents need to be on the lookout for “porch pirates.”

That’s the name given to criminals who follow delivery trucks, check out the area, then snatch packages off front porches.

With the Christmas season fast approaching, opportunities for thieves are on the rise.

But police in one California community have a plan to track them down. They have started putting out their own packages with expensive items inside, but have included a secret GPS tracker. When the package is taken, an alert is sent to police. Officers can then track the thief to their location or to where they are storing the stolen goods.

Last year alone 23 million Americans had packages stolen from their homes.
