ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The people have Missouri have spoken: Republican Eric Greitens will become the next governor of Missouri.

Greitens defeated Democrat Chris Koster, Missouri’s Attorney General,

Greitens, a democrat-turned-republican, has never sought or held elected office until he announced his run for the governorship in Sept. 2015. His victory gives republicans control of the Governor's Mansion, as well as both the House and the Senate for the first time in eight years.

Greitens is a military veteran who ran The Mission Continues, a non-profit foundation that helped veterans and the families of veterans. The first-time candidate touted himself as a political outsider, and pledged to "end corruption" in the state capital.

"Our mission is very clear," Greitens said following his victory. "More jobs and high pay, safer streets, and better schools for the people of Missouri."

Koster, however, took a different approach. He emphasized that his experience, 22 years in elected office, made him qualified to run the state government.

Greitens' victory caps off the most expensive governor's race in the country, which rose to more than $50 million.
