CHICAGO, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Democrat Tammy Duckworth has unseated incumbent Republican US Senator Mark Kirk in Illinois.

Duckworth consistently led in polling and pulled away closer to Election Day, something many attribute to a comment Kirk made about Duckworth’s Asian heritage during a debate.

Duckworth lost both of her legs while serving in the Iraq War.  Kirk suffered a stroke in 2012.

The senate seat was held by President Barack Obama from 2004-2008.
