KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A Kirkwood middle school is lending their helping hand to the school district, and inside that hand, is food.

Kirkwood School District leaders said about 17 percent of their students are on a program that provides lunch for free or a reduced cost.

It's that fact that inspired Nipher Middle School to start their own food bank.

Counselors at the school coordinated the distribution of food with students and families who need it. The coordination allows the recipients to remain confidential.

Eighth grade student Aubrey Wootten said the entire school helped to make the food pantry happen, "even though (the students) don't know who they are helping."

Fellow eighth grader Dylan Burgett said the opportunity to help the community is a good one.

"It's pretty cool we get to do stuff like this, especially in school," Burgett said.
