MARISSA (KMOV.com) -

A Metro East mother is facing child endangerment and aggravated battery charges after she was found with her son in a wooded area near a pond near Marissa, Illinois Monday.

Before the two were found, witnesses said Sarah Donley-Fortney, 29, and her 2-year-old son were last seen on a small boat on a pond near Doza School Road around 2:30 p.m. A city road worker spotted the woman going through a gate and onto private property. He said she then got out of her car and into a small boat with a child.

The worker said he saw the mother paddle across the small pond, get out and run onto an embankment before disappearing into the woods.

Donley-Fortney and her son were found close to the pond around 9 p.m.

The child was found tied up, wearing a diaper and shirt. He was wet and cold, but was otherwise uninjured. The mother had non-life threatening injuries that police were unsure how she got them.

Police considered the area where the two were found a crime scene.

Donley- Fortney and her son are from near Sparta, Illinois.
