FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police have identified a person of interest in their investigation of a Ferguson teen's death and are now on the search.

On Nov. 6, News 4 reported that police were searching for suspects linked to the death of 16 year-old Maleah Talton, whose body was found on the Ted Jones Trail on Nov. 4.

The Ferguson Police Department has named their person of interest as Evander Terrell Thompson.

"Where we found (Talton) we don't believe the incident occurred at that location," Commander Frank McCall Junior said. "We're just trying to piece things together and hopefully bring some closure to the family of this young lady."

Police said Thompson was an acquaintance of Talton, and he is known to police.  But the family of Talton say he was a boyfriend.

"It was rocky. He would beat her.  There were times she was left with black eyes several times," Tirria Blanks, the victim's mother, said.

Thompson was last seen in the 9700 block of Dennis Drive.

"This is tragic," McCall Junior said. "This is a baby.  This is a 16-year old girl.  This is something no one should take lightly.  This is a tragedy."

The victim's body was found on the morning of November 4 but police believe she was killed 24 or 48 hours prior to that.  They are asking the public to put themselves in the family's situation where they have to bury a 16-year old girl who was the victim of something that "never should have happened".
