LAKE ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A homeowner shot and killed a man who was trying to steal his vehicle in Lake St. Louis Friday morning.

Just before 1 a.m., police received a call about a vehicle that was stolen. Shortly after the call, police received another call from the same person about shots fired in the area of Lake St. Louis and Monterey Cypress.

After the gunshots were fired, the stolen vehicle traveled a few blocks and went off the roadway and into a grassy area near a home on Quail Meadows Drive.

When police found the vehicle, they also found a man, later identified as Lake St. Louis resident Shawn T. Jimenez, 31, dead of a gunshot wound inside.

The owner of the vehicle told police he heard his car alarm go off and when he went out to check he noticed someone trying to steal it, which is when he fired his gun at the suspect.

"It's sad at the end of the day someone lost their life and regardless of the circumstances that's always an unfortunate thing," said neighbor Nick Kuhns. "Nobody is immune to things like this no matter where you live things happen and all we can do is watch out for one another and take care of each other and just be vigilant no matter where you live."

The investigation is ongoing.
