Home for the holidays: Building begins for new Habitat for Humanity home

Posted: Updated:

For the second time this year, News 4 is a proud partner of the Habitat of Humanity St. Louis, along with ten other community partners, to help make owning a home possible for a deserving St. Louis family.

This year's recipient is a working, single mother of four children, and in two weeks, she will have a home to call her own in Hazelwood, Mo.

"(It is) a surreal moment, wonderful, dream come true," Fornisha said. "I'm just so excited."

It will take a lot of work, and an army of support from KMOV, Habitat for Humanity, and other community partners.

But Avis McHugh of the Habitat for Humanity of St. Louis said the workload is worth it for the end result.

"On dedication day, being able to see the complete house, homeowners (getting) the key, walk-in, and start a new life in a home they actually built for themselves; it's priceless," McHugh said.

The future of the homeowner will play a large role in the future, McHugh said Part of that role is making monthly payments on the home, which Fornisha said will already be on her agenda.

"That's fine with me," Fornisha said. "Most important thing is I'm going to follow the rules for Habitat for Humanity. Do what I need to do to get into my house."

Habitat for Humanity also works with the family on taking classes from financial aid, to home assistance.

Thousands of families apply for homes each year, and only 35 homes from Habitat for Humanity get built. Fornisha said she is beyond grateful for the life-changing opportunity.

"I don't have any words. It's just amazing, that's all I can say," Fornisha said.
