ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Stray Rescue of St. Louis is looking for homes for some of its dogs while it is closed due to a distemper outbreak.

The organization recently announced a distemper outbreak killed 20 of its dogs and infected more than two dozen others. More than half of the 130 dogs Stray Rescue keeps in its shelter have been tested and many have been cleared by medical staff for adoption or a temporary home.

Stray Rescue founder Randy Grim says the public should not worry about adopting a pet from Stray Rescue because precautions are being taken to put an end to the distemper outbreak. The shelter is being sanitized and scrubbed.

“People shouldn’t be afraid to adopt from Stray Rescue once a dog is medically cleared and all the tests have been done. They do not have distemper, they are not shedding the virus and they have a really nice strong immune system,” said Grim.

Infected animals are kept in a separate part of the shelter. A dog can still transmit the virus for up to four months, but Grim says the dogs are being constantly tested and treated.

Grimm also said that the community has been very supportive since Stray Rescue announced it was dealing with a distemper outbreak.

The Schlafly Tap Room, which is located nearby, is baking thousands of dog biscuits in an effort to raise $5,000 for Stray Rescue. The biscuits are being made from grain used in the brewing process.

Stray Rescue said it will soon be releasing the names of dogs available for adoption. All of those dogs have been medically cleared and are not a threat to spread distemper, the shelter says.
