DESLOGE,Mo. ( – A body was found inside the trunk of a car in Desloge after it crashed during a pursuit Thursday.

“I had been out to breakfast with my friends, came back to find the driveway packed with 15 to 10 patrol cars,” says homeowner Mike Harris.

Harris’ home is where the pursuit ended. It started when a Missouri state trooper spotted a suspicious driver on Highway 67 in St. Francois County and ran the driver’s plates. Police say the plates did not match the car so the trooper tried to pull the driver over, but the driver took off.

The trooper gave chase on 67 and then onto a private street, where the driver crashed into a tree. A passenger inside the car was taken into custody for questioning, police say. The driver was also later taken into custody.

As troopers were searching the car, they found a body in the trunk. Harris saw it as well.

“Walked back there, saw the car and there was something in the trunk that turned out be a body. I never paid too much attention to it, it was covered in a sheet,” he says.

The victim is 46-year-old-Michael J. Vanstavern, from Farmington, who among other things, owns the Holiday Inn Express in Farmington.

Police continue to investigate. No charges have been filed yet.
