CHESTER, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

CHESTER, Ill. (KMOV.com) - A small community turned out Thursday to say a final farewell to a fallen officer.

James Brockmeyer, 22, was laid to rest in Chester, Illinois. The young officer died in a crash Friday night, while he was chasing a suspect, police say.

Officer Brockmeyer joined the police force 10 months ago. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for the past five years. His family said serving the community was his dream job, and the police chief talked about his unwavering dedication to the department.

“When I think about James and I have pretty much nonstop for the past five days, or when I’m asked to describe him a few descriptors come to mind. Dedication, passion, enthusiasm and dedication again. The reason I mention it twice is simple, James’ dedication was evident even before we hired him,” said Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey.

At the funeral service, there were tearful tributes from his parents, sister, and fiancé, Lauren Hoops.

“In front of all these people I say ‘I love you with all I have Jamey, you forever have this girls’ heart,” said Hoops.

Brockmeyer’s mom, Dixie, said, “Your smile and willingness to help others have been the talk of the town. As you look down on us now I hope you are as proud of us as we are of you.”

After the service, hundreds of people lined the streets for his funeral procession. Officer Brockmeyer's family held a private buried service at St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
