Health Advisory issued for those who attended Belleville Chili Cook-Off

Posted: Updated:
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

An infectious outbreak in attendees of a chili cook-off has caused an investigation by multiple health departments.

The St. Clair County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella in those who attended the Belleville Chili Cook-Off on Oct. 8.

Anyone who is or has become ill from the Chili Cook-Off and works with children, the elderly, and those with sensitive immune systems should immediately refrain from work. They should also be tested for infection as soon as possible.

Symptoms for the infection include diarrhea, fever, chills, and abdominal pain.

To avoid spread Salmonella, the health departments advise food be cooked thoroughly, and hands be washed frequently after restroom use and before handling food.

To prevent dehydration, the health departments are advising the ill to hydrate throughout the day with fluids.

The departments are asking anyone who attended the event and are currently ill, or were ill at one time after Oct. 8, to contact their primary care provider for medical advice. They may also contact the St. Clair County Health Department at 618-233-6175. extension: 4434.
