ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Police are searching for two thieves who stole a tow truck from an Alton business.

On Sunday evening around 8:00, two people dressed in hoodies could be seen breaking into a tow truck on the lot of Cole's Recovery. They spent 30 minutes trying to get it to start, but the security system shut it down.

So instead they hooked a chain to the front of the all red tow truck.

"I just couldn't believe it, never seen anything like it. Never saw anyone steal a tow truck with a chain," said Ed Davenport who runs Cole's Recovery and the adjacent car lot, Past and Present Auto on Broadway.

The two thieves took off with the tow truck down an alley. Its hard to make out any description of the thieves but Davenport hopes someone spots either his tow truck or the suspects' pick up.

Davenport describes it as a white extended cab one-ton pick-up, possibly a Chevy. It has four large lights on top.

In the last six years, they've had three cars and now two tow trucks stolen, but in the past, surveillance video has helped the track down all of them.

They are offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
