MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV) – A bizarre story of a father and son both charged with heinous crimes against children.

The father, David Von Bergen Sr., is in jail awaiting trial on charges that he recorded a child in a changing area at a local church. Friday afternoon, his son, David Von Bergen Jr., pleaded guilty to sexual assault and recording child porn.

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons said Von Bergen Jr. needs to stay in jail. “This person is a monster. A monster living among us in our community,” said Gibbons.

Von Bergen Jr. is accused of assaulting 6-year-old twin sisters.

“It's the case that arose out of an investigation of downloaded child pornography which ultimately led to evidence that in fact the defendant had committed this sexual acts against these two young girls, and recorded some of the events,” said Gibbons.

In court today, Von Bergen Jr. pleaded guilty. Gibbons said authorities arrested Von Bergen Jr. back in 2014.

“In fact, when they entered the home he was in the act of continuing to download child pornography,” said Gibbons.

Once convicted, this will be Von Bergen's second child porn conviction, and that's not the only bombshell with this story.

Von Bergen Jr's father, David von Bergen Sr., is currently in the Madison county jail.  The former church elder at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto is charged with placing hidden cameras throughout the church, including in the changing area, recording a child.

“Those charges remain pending, and of course if proven guilty, or he pleads guilty to those charges, we will certainly have to wonder whether or not if the apple fell far from the tree,” said Gibbons.
