ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Although there has been progress made, between the city and county in an effort to reunite the two, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger warns there is still a lot of work to be done before the issue would be taken to the voters.

The Municipal League of Metro St. Louis gave approval to continue conversations between city and county leaders in a meeting that was held Thursday night.  The Municipal League is a non-partisan, non-profit association of cities and villages in St. Louis County.

The League has taken the stance that the separation of the city and the county over the last decades has inhibited economic development in the region and ending that separation would remove obstacles.

Steve Stenger has not said if he is for or against the issue, but said he needs to see a formal plan before making any comments.

On Thursday, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay went on Twitter to say:

St. Louis City originally was a part of St. Louis County but voters decided to separate in a referendum vote in 1876. Any plan would require both city and county voters to pass the measure or it would have to go to a statewide vote as a petition.
