ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Professional performers who entertain sick children do not understand why people are dressing as creepy clowns to terrorize others.

Performers known as clown doctors visit patients at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in order to raise patients’ spirits. Studies show laughing can boost the immune system and reduce stress.

“What’s really cool for us is to go in and change the tone of the room, like a child is really upset, crying, and we go in and help them calm down, change their attitude,” said Jane Abendshein, who performs as a clown named Dr. Tickles.

Abendshein said she is concerned about the recent creepy clown sightings.

“There are so many people in this generation who are going to miss out on the benefits of clowning. They’re not going to get to laugh and have fun. Instead they’re not going to get to laugh and have fun, they’re going to be scared. They hear the word clown and associate that with the scary clowns,” said Abenschein.
