UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A water main break caused a small gas leak and a street to collapse in University City Wednesday night.

The break occurred around 9 p.m. on Canton Avenue near the intersection of Mendell Drive.

After the water main broke, rushing water eroded the ground around a piece of Bobcat construction equipment, which then fell into a hole it was sitting near, hitting the gas line.

Both the water main and gas line were repaired Thursday afternoon. They said no one nearby was evacuated.

The piece of construction equipment was removed from the hole around 7:40 a.m.

Lacelde gas said anyone who smells gas in their home should leave and call 314-342-0800.

Canton road is currently closed.
