NORTH ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

MSD crews have begun a four-year project meant to stop sewer drains from overflowing during heavy rains.

Crews are building an underground tunnel that will hold rain water. The tunnel will be 160 feet deep and run along Riverview and Hall Street in North City.

Demolition for the project starts Thursday and will impact Metro stops in the area. It is expected to be finished in 2020.

The project is part of a $5 billion initiative to improve St. Louis’ sewer systems.
