UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

University City leaders are touting a new audit that shows response times of a private ambulance service averaging 4:30.

"It's very good news for the city," say City Manager Lehman Walker.

The independent audit was conducted by Emergency Services Consulting International of Oregon and looked at ambulance calls for the first year the city contracted with Gateway Ambulance.

The decision to switch to private ambulance service in 2015 wasn't easy.  Many residents wanted to keep city firefighters working in ambulances.

No U City firefighters lost their jobs in the switch and now Walker says they're able to commit more fire personnel to firefighting and they're saving between $500,000 to $750,000 a year.
