ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

CRESTWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Fifth graders from Sappington Elementary School sold countless cups of lemonade at their drive-thru stand at Sperreng Middle School on Wednesday.

They were raising money for strangers who are dealing with the unthinkable, especially one family in particular.

"Today's lemonade stand is for the cop who was shot, and we are giving the money to his family," said fifth grader Haley Tucci.

Tucci is talking about the family of fallen St. Louis County Police Officer Blake Snyder.

"Our kids live in the neighborhood where Officer Snyder was shot, and they came to school that day very distraught, very upset,” said teacher Elaine McArthur.

So the school decided to put on the fundraiser for BackStoppers, the organization that provides financial support to families of first responders killed in the line of duty. The response at the lemonade stand was overwhelming. Some companies even stopped by to donate thousands of dollars. Everyone is just trying to make life a little easier for those grieving the loss of a loved one.

Thursday morning the school announced they had riased $20,571.32.
