The Kirkwood School District is teaching their students about being inclusive in a rather creative way.

October is Abilities Awareness Month, and Keysor Elementary students are learning empathy through interactive lessons.

At different stations, students are taught what it's like to live with different challenges.

A parent advisory group organized the month-long event and one parent said the lesson teaches children they are alike in more ways than one.

"Each week, we have different themes and one of the main important things about this month is to heighten the awareness of how similar all the kids are," said Kelley McNees, whose daughter Maggie has Spina Bifida. "They have more in common than they have that are different."

Maggie McNees said it helps her learn empathy for her fellow students, as well.
