(KMOV.com) – The Humane Society rescued six starving horses and two starving mules from a farm in northern Missouri Tuesday.

The animals were very thin and emaciated when they were rescued. They were living on one acre of barren land without forage near Milan, Missouri.  The property includes several building and not enough open land to feed all of the animals.

The Humane Society says members of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce became aware of the situation in June and tried to work with the owners to improve conditions. However, when Taskforce investigators visited the property in early October, they found there was no available food for the animals and only filthy water.

Because the condition of the animals didn’t improve, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant to remove the animals.

The horses and mules will be transported to the Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union for treatment.

The Humane Society expects the owners to be charged to with several counts of animal abuse and neglect.
