ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A new study of campaign finances shows the candidates in the race for Missouri governor are number one in the nation in spending.

According to the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, $27 million has been spent so far on over 70,000 ads since the August primaries. That is the highest amount spent in any of the 11 governor's races taking place in November.

"Eric Greitens is number one in the country when it comes to spending and Chris Koster is not that far behind," said Ben Wieder from the Center for Public Integrity.

A look at the Missouri Ethics Commission website shows Greitens has spent $10 million thus far with Koster spending almost $8 million. Wieder said the race for Missouri governor is attracting out of state money, especially from the Democratic and Republican Governors Associations.

Another reason so much money is being spent on this particular race? State law.

"One of the quirks of Missouri campaign finance law is that there are no contribution limits so that means huge amounts of money are flowing in."
