GODFREY, Ill. (KMOV.com) - The late Blake Snyder, 33, was relatively new to the St. Louis County Police Department.

He served four years as an officer before he was shot and killed during the line of duty. But his family says he believed with his heart and soul that he was meant to be an officer.

"Our brother died a hero and we want him remembered for his love for the badge. His city, the people and his family," said Shannon Hoerle in regard to her brother-in-law.

Snyder leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth, and their 2-year-old son.

Hoerle said Synder became a police officer to honor his wife's father.

"He knew the risk he took every day. He said his heart and soul was meant to be a policeman and he loved that badge," said Hoerle.

Snyder was active in his church, Destiny Church in West County. He was a leader and mentored teens. He also served on the Board of Directors at Riverbend Family Ministries.

Snyder grew up in Godfrey, Illinois and was a graduate of Alton High School.

Funeral arraignments are pending as of October 6.
