SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

St. Louis County Police Chief John Belmar said that the environment that police officers work in an environment that can be described as difficult on "an ideal day."

An example of that difficulty was on display Thursday morning, as the St. Louis County Police Department lost one of their own: Officer Blake Snyder.

Officer Snyder is the fourth shooting death of a police officer in the department’s history, the first since 2000.

Chief Belmar spoke about the officer’s fatal shooting during a press conference later that morning. After he spoke of how proud he was of his officers, Chief Belmar also spoke of the grim environment they have to work in on a daily basis.

“At times, as we have seen, it is an environment that can be incredibly dangerous," Chief Belmar said.

Since Jan. 1, St. Louis County Police have seen 996 cases of aggravated assault, 22 murders, 85 cases of simple assaults, and 2,639 cases of narcotic and drug law violations.

Snyder responded to a call in the 10700 block of Arno Drive., which is a part of the Affton Precinct of South St. Louis County.

The Affton Precinct alone has seen 56 cases of aggravated assault since the year began.

Snyder’s fatal shooting is just the third shooting of an officer in four months.

On July 4, St. Louis County Police were called to investigate the shooting of a Hillsdale Officer who was shot while attempting to make an arrest. The officer survived that shooting despite being struck twice.

A few days later, Ballwin Police Officer Michael Flamion was shot while making a traffic stop. While Flamion survived the shooting, he was rendered paralyzed from the neck down.

At the time, Chief Belmar said that Officer Flamion was ambushed by the suspect.
