O’FALLON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Police arrested a convicted murderer who they say threatened to beat up a car salesman during a test drive, all in an effort to steal the car.

On Tuesday, police say James Noel, 49, took a test drive from Marshall Ford in O’Fallon, Missouri. Nearing the end of test drive, police say Noel told the salesman “get out or I’ll beat you up. Get out of this [or this] ends badly.”

The salesman complied and Noel took off in the 2016 Black Ford F-150 pick-up truck. After stealing the car, police say Noel hit two St. Charles City police cars as they attempted to stop him. There was a brief pursuit down I-70 when St. Ann detectives heard the call over the radio. They pursued the stolen truck and took Noel into custody.

Noel told investigators he stole the car because he needed to get into the city and planned on living inside the vehicle for a few days.

Noel has a long criminal history including second-degree murder, robbery, aggravated battery and armed criminal action. He previously served 25 years in prison. O'Fallon police say Noel must remain locked up because he “is a danger to the crime victim, the community or any other person.”
