PINE LAWN, Mo. ( – Police in Pine Lawn have one suspect in custody and are searching for another after four officers were shot at in the 4200 block of Oakwood. As of Wednesday afternoon no charges had been filed.

Officials said the officers were investigating a domestic disturbance call when 20 to 30 shots were fired at them. Investigators said the shooting was unrelated to the domestic disturbance.

The officers heard the bullets whizzing by, but none of them were hit. After the barrage was over, the officers chased the suspects into the city.

“The officers were actually able to pursue them,” North County Cooperative Chief Tim Swope said. “They jumped in the car and got in a pursuit with them down to the city on Kingshighway and Page. Thankfully, city police helped us out and Metro Air Wing were able to apprehend one of the suspects, he’s in custody as we speak.”

"We were very fortunate none of our officers were injured."

The suspects fled on foot after leaving their car at the intersection of Page and Kingshighway. One suspect was caught, while the second is still missing.  Police are fielding tips from the community.

"Nothing that's concrete yet," Chief Swope said. "But we've got our entire detective bureau (working) so my hope is that sometime very soon we will have a good direction to proceed."

It’s still unclear why the suspects were shooting at the police officers.  Chief Swope says it's "certainly possible" it was an ambush but they don't know that yet.

Attention now turns to the officers' safety.  Police tell News 4 there is no obvious answer other than to tell everyone to be extra careful.

"From here forward you don't even have to tell these guys that if you go up (near Oakwood) you better be careful and you better have more officers than you normally have," Chief Swope said.
