MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. ( – Police in Maryland Heights say a 15-year-old tried to carjack a man at gunpoint Sunday night but the victim fought back.

According to authorities, around 8:15 Sunday evening at Running Ridge Court, the victim was getting out of his car when police say a teenager pointed a gun at him and demanded his car keys.

“The victim refused to give him his keys and the two began to argue, the suspect then fired a shot at the victim,” said Rich White, Sergeant for Maryland Heights.

Sgt. White says the teenager jumped back in his original car, where four other teens were waiting, and took off, but not without first firing off another shot at the victim. The victim wasn’t hurt, but police warn others about fighting back against armed suspects.

“I personally would submit, this particular individual, the victim, he took a chance when he resisted the robbery. The suspect was able to get not one but two shots off at him. Fortunately he missed. Our victim was not hit and he is alive. I think he realizes looking back at this he’s very fortunate,” said Sgt. White.

The victim as able to give police a good description of the suspect and the car. Creve Coeur police were able to stop the vehicle. They took five teenagers in for questioning.

Police are awaiting charges on the 15-year-old gunman. Police said all the teens were from Illinois.
