MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A Wood River, Illinois man is in custody after a shooting incident that eventually involved multiple Metro East law enforcement agencies.

According to police, Brenton Webster, 29, first encountered Alton police officers around 10:30 p.m. on September 29 at the Casey’s General Store in the 3400 block of Fosterburg Road.

Webster had reportedly entered Casey’s suffering from a gunshot wound and asked to call an ambulance. When officers arrived, Webster allegedly told them he had been shot by a subject who arranged a meeting through a Craigslist posting. Webster said the meeting took place in unincorporated Madison County near Fosterburg Rd. and Interstate 255.

However, an investigation into Webster’s story by Alton police and Madison County Sheriff’s officers revealed he was actually shot during a home invasion in Godfrey, Illinois.

According to police documents, Webster knocked on the door of a home in the 300 block of Tremont Drive and asked to use the bathroom.

Once inside, he reportedly attacked the homeowner with a gun. The homeowner also had a gun, and during the altercation shot Webster, causing him to flee.

Webster was treated for his injuries, and was taken into custody by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department immediately after being released from the hospital Saturday. He is being held in the St. Louis City Jail until extradited, charged with felony charges of home invasion, armed robbery and unlawful possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
