SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

The father of one of the victims attacked and beaten by dozens of people in South City is taking his son’s recovery day-by-day.

Jim Ludwig says his 37-year-old son is suffering with bleeding and swelling of the brain in a local trauma unit.

Police say the 37-year-old and his 34-year-old girlfriend saw their teenage neighbor being harassed and tried to help Sunday evening on Virginia Avenue.

“[My son] doesn't understand why he had to take a beating for trying to help somebody,” said Ludwig. “I'm sure he's going to be left with some emotional scars, something to think about. It's a severe beating he took.”

Police say the 15 suspects apparently got aggravated and began beating Ludwig’s son and girlfriend with a tree limb.

News 4 spotted several broken ceramic flower pots where investigators say the attack happened.

“You think how precious life is and it can be taken away from you in a matter of moment, by animals," said Ludwig.

Neighbors say they are on high alert.

Wednesday afternoon, News 4 checked with police and investigators say they’re following strong leads, but no arrests have been made.

The case is still under investigation.
