ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A St. Charles family has been living with what they call a hazard in their front yard for months.

A 240-volt power line running from the street to their home has been sitting on the ground for three months.

“This was supposed to be a temporary fix,” said Matthew Huffman, homeowner.

Huffman says in July a squirrel chewed through their power line and they lost power. As a temporary fix, Ameren Missouri installed a temporary line that runs through the yard and across the driveway.

“I’ve explained that to them, we're constantly driving over this line in and out of our garage and I’ve thrown up the concern to them of what if water hits it,” said Huffman.

At the end of August, the sub-contractor for Ameren Missouri partially dug up part of the front yard with the plan to bury the line. But nothing since then has happened. So not only do the Huffman’s have a power line in their yard, they have plywood covered holes.

“I’m just so concerned for the safety of my family and they [Ameren Missouri] don’t seem to care one bit,” said Huffman.

An Ameren Missouri spokesperson insists the wire is durable and poses no risks. If there was a safety concern they would be out right away.

But Ameren Missouri does admit the temporary fix has taken longer than expected because of scheduling issues. They plan on coming to the house first thing in the morning on September 28 to finish the job.
