ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A police officer is injured after a suspect's vehicle struck him during a police chase.

St, Louis Metropolitan Police officers were patrolling in the 600 block of Humboldt Avenue when they attempted to pull over a vehicle that police said was stolen.

The driver refused to pull over, causing police to deploy spike strips. When the suspect drove over the strips, police said he intentionally swerved the vehicle and struck a police officer in the leg.

The officer was attempting to jump out of the way of the suspect vehicle as it swerved.

After the vehicle crashed, the suspect, a 33 year-old man, fled the scene of the crash on foot. He was taken into custody following a short pursuit by police.

The police officer who was struck was transported to the hospital. He sustained an injury to his leg-ankle area.

The officer is in stable condition.
