ST. CLAIR, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A fire broke out at a church in St. Clair, Mo. Monday, causing significant damage.

The fire broke out at Roots Church on North Commercial Avenue. A suspect allegedly threw a brick through the main doors to get in before setting the church on fire. Chairs are charred, there are holes in the floor and burned fixtures.

The church recently completed a renovation.

“It is heartbreaking when you put a lot of hard work into something, but it’s just a building. I teach all the time that our church is the people, whether in this building or another building. It’s all about people,” said Pastor Gaszak.

Gaszak’s truck was stolen from the church parking lot in March, 2015. A friend helped him get it back.

“We want the suspect to know we’re not upset because we believe this person is hurting and it’s a cry for help. It is important as a church that we rally around someone like that,” said Gaszak.

A 20-year-old believed to be responsible has been arrested. Police say he has a history of mental illness and was taken to a health care facility.

The church is looking for a temporary home.
