GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Police are warning that a popular prank could leave someone, including the prankster, seriously hurt.

There have been scary clown sightings all across the country, and now creepy clowns have been spotted in the Metro East in Granite City.

“Stay off the area. Be normal. If you’re playing around, do a circus or something. Just stay away from the kids,” said Jarheta White, whose children spotted a clown a few days ago. That’s something she doesn’t like.

“The kids probably look at it like a fun thing, but at the end of the day, you don’t know if the clowns are going to do anything,” she said. “Or if the kids are going to do something to the clowns because to me, different stories are going around.”

Police say there are a lot of unanswered questions about why this is even happening. What they do know is that they’ve received ten calls about clown sightings within the last several days.

Granite City has a high volume of concealed carry permit holders and police are warning this prank could put someone at risk. Officers are warning about the dangers and how charges could result against the people involved in the prank.

Clowns have also been seen in Wood River, but police there say they’ve only had two reports.
