MOLINE ACRES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A washer and dryer were donated to help the Riverview Gardens School District to improve attendance at Moline Acres Elementary.

Bonita Jamison, Assistant Superintendent for Riverview Gardens School District said, “When parents were contacted and asked why children weren’t coming to school, typically the response that the parent liaisons received would be their children’s clothes had not been laundered. And so we began to try to remove the barriers for our families."

The school put a couch, television and computer in the laundry room so parents can visit or volunteer in the building while they wait.

“The students who had access to the washers and dryer they had 13 fewer absences than the students who did not,” said Jamison.

Mia Love, third grade teacher at Moline Elementary says the attendance has improved.

“The attendance has really picked up. The kids are more comfortable coming to school in clean clothes. They're definitely more excited and having a great time,” said Love.
