ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An accident in the new construction zone on eastbound Interstate 70 just before 1-170 caused a huge backup for drivers Thursday morning.

Some of those drivers contacted News 4 saying it was very confusing. It was the perfect combination of a series of events, construction and a crash that turned the highway into a parking lot.

"It has slowed it down even if you would have been here at six, you would have seen it backed up, it is just crazy," said LA Bassett, gas station manager.

Bassett is the manager of a gas station that parallels the interstate. She said she dealt with frustrated drivers.

"They are pretty angry, pretty much. I am good with customer service and I can spin the whole situation, have them go a whole different direction, or we will have a bunch of angry St. Louis people right now," said Bassett.

One driver told News 4 about the issue he came across while making his way along 1-70.

"It can be a little challenging at times, the lanes do get quite narrow. That surprised me. I am not actually from this town so it was uncomfortable driving through there because I have a larger vehicle," said Phil Garrett, driver.

News 4 went to MoDOT to let them know about some of the concerns from drivers. A big concern was about signage.

"We are constantly looking at our work zones and one of the things that makes it challenging is the rolling terrain on I-70. So yes, we are working to make sure it is as clear as possible," said Lisa Kuntz with MoDOT.

Kuntz says there are some things people can do while this project is going on to make their drive a little more manageable.

"Give themselves extra time in the morning and as they go through the construction zone and slow down pay attention the signs," said Kuntz.

The project is expected to last for two weeks.
