JENNINGS (KMOV.com) -

The wife of 71-year-old Steven White cannot afford a proper burial 12 days after White was murdered.

Darlene Safford was married to White for 38 years and she says things have been tough.

“It has really just been really hard. Like I said with the grace of God I'm able to stand and talk because I'm very, very upset about this,” said Safford. “I haven't come up with the funds to actually have his service because I don't have it. I just don't have it.”

Police say two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old are connected to White’s death.

Safford says they need to come up with more than $3,000 to properly lay him to rest.

To add even more turmoil, Safford says her rent is past due and she can’t afford that either.

“Steve was the sole breadwinner. [The landlord] says, 'I have bills I have too, I have to pay bills so we're going to have to do something.' So I need help with my rent and also the service,” said Safford.

News 4 found out there is help offered for families like Safford’s.

The Crime Victim Advocacy Center in St. Louis says it's one of the oldest victim service agencies in the county. The staff works closely with the state’s victim’s compensation program.

“People think we exaggerate when we say that our clients have to choose between where they live and whether they have a funeral,” said Jessica Meyers with Crime Victims Advocacy Center. “The biggest problem we see with funds - especially at the local level is that victim's compensation has to wait for things like the death certificate. Death certificates on homicide cases in St. Louis City are taking 8-12 weeks to come back.”

The family set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
