MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A water main break forced an elementary school in the Parkway School District to dismiss early Wednesday.

McKelvey Elementary announced they would dismiss at 12:05 p.m. because of the break. There will also be no Adventure Club Wednesday.

Contractors were repairing a driveway when they struck a 20-inch water main on McKelvey just south of Dorsett with a jackhammer.

Crews with Missouri American Water were called to the scene and said they hope to have a temporary fix in place, including pavement, by this evening.

Officials say 50 homes are impacted, along with area businesses.

"It wasn't near this bad as it was four years ago, we got the dog in, and just started getting everything off the floor. I don't think anything got ruined this time," says  Sherry Akers.

Akers says the inconvenience factor is huge. With no water, she can't take a shower to get ready for work.

Restaurants in the area tell News 4 they are taking it hour by hour.

"With the little low pressure in the water and it makes a problem with the dishwasher and everything in general so we have to see how the time goes," says Lara Guille, manager of Chihuahua's.
