The phone rings and the person on the other end claims to be with Microsoft; the phone call turns out to be is a big scam and Microsoft says scammers are targeting people across the country.

News 4 Investigates continues to receive complaints from local residents that received the call.

Cheryl Fulk of Mascoutah, Illinois said she was contacted, and by coincidence was having problems with her computer.

"They said they were from Microsoft and they noticed I had a problem with my computer," said Fulk.

On two separate occasions Fulk paid the callers a total of $400 to solve her computer issue. According to Microsoft, they do not call computer owners "unsolicited."

According to Microsoft, tech support scams impact an estimated 3.3 million people in the United States with losses totaling more than $1.5 billion each year.

In addition, according to an email from a Microsoft spokesperson, the company has received more than "180,000 reports of fraudulent tech support scams from customers around the world."

Microsoft offered a blog on the topic.
