ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Debbie Hankin started participating in “Pedal the Cause” after her husband lost his battle with melanoma.

“He was a father. He was a brother. He was also a friend to many, many people,” Debbie said about Frank.

In December 2012, Frank developed a backache that would not get better.

“He ended up getting an MRI and he had metastatic melanoma in his spine,” said Debbie.

In July 2013, Frank lost his battle.

The couple always enjoyed riding bikes, which is why Debbie joined “Pedal the Cause.”

“I had a friend who had heard about pedal and suggested that we started a team, maybe get our minds off the fact that Frank had just passed away, and maybe raise a few dollars,” she said. “So we did it. The first year we raised about $30,000 and then we were hooked. It became a way for me to bring some meaning to the tragedy that had come into my life.”

Last year, the team, named “Frank the Tank,” raised nearly $140,000 and had almost 70 people participating.

This year, the team is riding for Arianna, a girl who is fighting Neuroblastoma.

“It’s ultimately about finding a cure for cancer, but in the interim I think it’s about giving patients and families a way to live with cancer until we get to the next breakthrough,” Debbie said.

The whispers, snickering and clicks on a keyboard from sharing a video have become loud enough to grab just about everyone's attention in a small town in St. Francois County. “Makeup...you look too fat, you're too ugly in makeup... you just need to stop it because you look like a hideous mother f******,” the girl in the video says.
