ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A driver and passenger were rescued following an overnight crash in north St. Louis.

The crashed occurred near the intersection of Salisbury Street and Natural Bridge Avenue when their car hit a pole.

Firefighters said hitting the pole probably saved the life of the passenger and driver.

"The individual still had his foot pressed on the accelerator and the wheels were still turning," said Captain Garon Mosby with the St. Louis Fire Department.

The St. Louis Fire Department said both the driver and the passenger overdosed on drugs. The drug they overdosed on is unknown at this time.

Authorities said Narcan was used to help the pair recover from the overdose. Mosby said a new law will soon allow firefighters to carry Narcan just like paramedics and police officers.

Both the driver and passenger are injured. But authorities say both are in conscious and stable condition.
