Voter booth selfies may soon be banned

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON, Mass. (KMOV.com) - If you are thinking about taking a selfie in the voting booth on election day, you might want to put your phone down. The First Circuit of Appeals in Boston is looking at whether or not banning selfies in the voting booth is a violation of free expression or legitimate way to combat fraud.

This is the first time a federal appeals court is considering the issue.

The court is looking at a 2014 New Hampshire law that makes it a crime, punishable of up to $1,000 for voters taking pictures of their ballots and sharing them on social media. Enforcement of the law was blocked a year ago by a federal judge, and the state appealed it.

Right now, most of the states, including Missouri have banned selfies in the voting booths. However, the law is unclear in Illinois, Arkansas, Connecticut, Idaho, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
