Report of abduction came from "spoofed" call

Posted: Updated:

PARK HILLS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The St. Francois County Sheriff's Department is investigating a recent call to a family in Park Hills informing them one of their children had been abducted. The caller claimed to be with the Central R-3 School District and the caller ID showed that the call came from the district office.

Assistant superintendent Troy Bollinger told News 4 the call didn't come from anyone with the school district and the claim of an abduction was false. He said authorities believe the caller used an app that allows someone to choose what the caller ID displays so someone will think the call is coming from some place that it's not. It's a practice known as "spoofing."

It turns out the family that received the call didn't have any children attending the Central R-3 School District and was suspicious of the call. The family member notified the school and the sheriff's department.

The district sent home a letter to parents to inform them about what happened.
