(KMOV.com) - A West County elementary school wants to help officer Mike Flamion on his long road to recovery in the form of a new van.

As of September 14, the staff at Ballwin Elementary School have raised more than $1,600 for officer Flamion from T-shirt sales and donations.

Teachers say they are using the tragedy as a teachable moment.

Sue Scheibel, speech language pathologist said, "It's not something that we are thinking of just this week or 10 days. It's going across the entire school year. We want it to be there and be a part of who we are and how we teach these children going forward hopefully to have a lifetime appreciation for the sacrifices that are made for them."

Officers say they are thankful for the support that people have shown to officer Flamion.

Kevin Scott, Police Chief for Ballwin Police Department said, "Mike sacrificed an enormous amount for Ballwin and I will never let Ballwin forget what he sacrificed."

Students at Ballwin Elementary School also wrote letters and cards to officer Flamion thanking him for his service.
