ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A local pastor is bringing showers to those who need them to most.

Jake Austin was introduced to News 4 viewers in June when he started a non-profit to provide showers to people living on the streets. He outfitted a truck with two showers and sinks. At the time, he was getting water for the operation from a hydrant at Cass and 10th Street.

“Folks getting’ clean,” Austin said. “It’s something we all take for granted.”

After Austin’s story aired, ‘Shower to the People’ went viral.

“We ended up getting a video with “Now This” and a couple of other online media sources that picked us up from you guys initially,” Communications Director David Draper said. “Roughly 80 million views over the course of July and an onslaught of thousands of emails and Facebook messages.”

“I’ve done Irish radio, Canada radio, Chile and just, you name it, it has been crazy,” said Austin. “People all over the planet emailing us, calling us, tweeting us, texting us, wanting to put one of our trucks in their city.”

The outpouring of support prompted Austin to start a new campaign he calls “20 by 2020.”

“Our goal is to have 20 trucks in 20 cities by the year 2020,” he said.

In fact, the group already has a truck in Indianapolis that is being turned into a mobile shower.

While seeing his idea go global is a godsend, for Austin, it’s more about the people.

“Coming out of the shower and feeling human again, having some dignity that they literally might not get anywhere else during the week has been amazing to me,” said Austin.
