ST. LOUIS – Randal Grichuk’s seesaw 2016 campaign logs another chapter Tuesday when the Cardinal outfielder was sent down to Triple-A Memphis once again as the club makes way for a healthy Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Moss.
Grichuk, 24, was optioned to Memphis earlier in the season spending three weeks trying to right his approach at the plate. When he returned to the majors July 5th he appeared to have figured it out surging with an eight game hit streak, but the mojo quickly ran out. Grichuk produced just four hits over the next 14 games putting his hit total well below his strikeout number (24).
Grichuk’s power outage affords the Cardinals the opportunity to keep hot hitting Tommy Pham and Jeremy Hazelbaker on the club’s 25-man roster with the return of Peralta and Moss.
Peralta will resume play at shortstop as St. Louis officially put All-Star Aledmys Diaz (right thumb fracture) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to August 1st.
Moss has been sidelined since July 4th with an ankle injury; prior to that he lead the team in home runs (17).
Additionally recently-acquire reliever Zach Duke will put on a Redbird uniform Tuesday as the club opens up a three game series in Cincinnati. Duke will wear jersey number 29. To make room, St. Louis also optioned Dean Kiekhefer.
