Carbondale officer shot during police chase, search under way for suspect

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - An investigation is under way after a Carbondale officer was shot during a police chase.

The incident started just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 in the 700 block of North Robert A. Stalls Street.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers on patrol in the area heard gunshots.

As the officers were headed to the scene, they found a tan, four-door vehicle, driving away from the area at a high rate of speed.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the drivers would not come to a halt, resulting in a police chase.

During the chase, a suspect fired several gunshots at the officers, hitting the police car and one of the pursuing officers.

The officer that was shot was immediately taken to Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound. He was later transported to a hospital in St. Louis for additional treatment. He remains in serious condition.

No word yet on the identity of the officer.

The search continues for the suspect involved in the incident. 

Illinois State Police are leading the investigation. 

Carbondale Police, the Jackson County State's Attorney's Office, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and the SIU Department of Public Safety is helping with  the investigation.
