VENICE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A worker was pronounced dead after being trapped under a coil at a Venice plant Friday morning.

Kevin J. Slaton, 56,  of Granite City was at the Custom Steel Processing plant, located at 1001 College Street, when the incident occurred around 8 a.m.

Inside the facility are large open-air rooms with giant coils of steel, which are moved using a crane. Officials said he was moving one of the coils with the crane when it fell, trapping him.

According to authorities, Slaton, who was a long-time employee at the facility, was found about five minutes after the coil fell.

Following the incident, out of respect for Slaton, the facility ordered all workers to go home for the day.

The Venice Police Department and OSHA are currently investigating.

The Madison County Coroner has ruled the cause of death to be blunt head trauma.
