ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – An elderly woman was knocked to the ground during an attempted armed robbery in north St. Louis late Wednesday night.

The victim’s son contacted News 4 after an SUV pulled up alongside his mom on East College Street and a suspect got out around 11 p.m. After exiting the SUV, the suspect, who police said showed a gun, knocked the woman, Hattie Swift, to the ground and grabbed her car keys. Swift said she had just returned home from the store when the suspects arrived.

After being knocked to the ground, the 74-year-old’s neighbors interrupted the incident and the suspect dropped the keys and went back to the SUV, which left the scene in an unknown direction.

Swift was not hurt. Swift's family told News 4 they want her to leave the neighborhood, her home of more than 40 years, out of concern for her safety.

Swift said she's not sure a move would make a difference.

"Where am I gonna move to? It's happening everywhere," said Swift.

Anyone with information on the crime should contact police or CrimeStoppers.
