SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A shootout in a south St. Louis neighborhood Tuesday has left a 17-year-old in critical condition.

"At first we thought it was fire crackers you know but it was pow pow pow," says a neighbor who lives where the shootout happened.

Police say multiple gun shots were fired at four people from a car. A 17-year-old was shot in the head and chest.

Many people were in the 3900 block of Michigan Avenue when the gunfire broke out. The victim is still in critical and unstable condition.

"He said somebody is shooting fire crackers. I said no those are gun shots," says a witness.

"I saw the bullet coming out of his head and that was sad," says a witness.

Police say one of the victims fired back at the suspects as they drove off but none of them were hurt.

"I never seen nothing like this going down before like this. The way youngsters behave around here," says a neighbor.

Even though the victim is in critical condition, the homicide unit is taking over this investigation.
